Lyrics

This is how I fight my battles (at Your table)
It may look like I’m surrounded, but I’m surrounded by You
Nothing is as strong as Your blood
This is how I fight my battles, right here at the table, Your blood and body has overcome
This is how we fight our battles
You’ve already overcome

This is how I fight my battles (at Your table)

  • Fight the good fight of faith (1 Tim 1:18-19; 1 Tim 6:12; 2 Tim 4:7-8)
  • We do not war according to the flesh, but our weapons are divinely powerful, we destroy everything raised up against God, we take every thought captive (2 Cor 10:3-5)
  • God prepares a table before me in the presence of my enemies (Psa 23:5)
  • Communion, the table of the Lord, proclaims forgiveness from sin by the blood of Jesus and faith in Him until He returns (1 Cor 11:23-26; Mat 26:26-30)

The fight of faith is to retain faith in Jesus despite our circumstances, whether it be external attacks from the enemy or condemnation from the enemy regarding our own sin. The truth is we are forgiven and saved by grace, it is our faith in Him and His victory for us that is powerful.  He provides for us even in the midst of battle.

It may look like I’m surrounded, but I’m surrounded by You

  • We walk by faith, not by sight (2 Cor 5:7)
  • The nations surrounded me and attacked but the Lord helped me, He is my strength, song, and salvation (Psa 118:10-14)
  • When we are surrounded by evil our response should be to call on the Lord (Psa 40:12-13)
  • We rejoice in our tribulations, perseverance brings character which bring hope, and hope does not disappoint (Rom 5:3-5)
  • God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God.  If God is for us, who is against us? Nothing can separate us from the love of God (Rom 8:28-39)
  • We rejoice in trials so our faith may be proven genuine and through our love and faith in Him we are filled with joy (1 Pet 1:6-9)
  • The army of Aram surrounded Israel but the army of God which outnumbered Aram was revealed to be with Israel standing ready with them (2 Kin 6:11-17)
  • Israel after finally leaving Egypt are on the edge of the Red Sea and surrounded by Pharaoh’s army. However, the cloud, the presence of God, moved between Israel and Pharaoh’s army. Israel thought they were surrounded by the enemy, but God surrounded Israel with His own presence and protected them from the enemy. (Exo 14:9,13-14,19-20)

Even in the face of adversity we trust that God is in control.  While reasoning in the natural may suggest the impossible, with God all things are possible.  Having this confidence not only can we endure adversity but we can rejoice through it knowing God is able to deliver even from death.

Nothing is as strong as Your blood

  • We are justified by His blood and saved from wrath (Rom 5:9)
  • We have redemption through His blood, forgiveness from sin by grace (Eph 1:7)
  • We are brought near to God by the blood of Christ (Eph 2:13)
  • The blood of Christ cleanses our consciences to serve God (Heb 9:14)
  • We are at peace with and reconciled to God through the blood of the cross (Col 1:19-20)
  • We have confidence to enter the Holy place by the blood of Jesus (Heb 10:19-22)
  • We are cleansed from all sin by the blood of Jesus (1 Jhn 1:7)
  • We overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the testimony of Jesus (Rev 12:11)

The power of the blood of Jesus is unparalleled.  His blood redeems, justifies, saves, reconciles, cleanses, brings peace, provides access, brings near, and enables us to overcome.

This is how I fight my battles, right here at the table, Your blood and body has overcome

  • The broken body and poured out blood of Jesus provides forgiveness for sin (Mat 26:26-28)
  • The body and blood of Jesus gives eternal life and those who partake abide in Him (Jhn 6:53-58)
  • We have peace in Jesus, tribulation in the world, but Jesus has overcome the world (Jhn 16:33)

A proclamation again highlighting the power in the death and resurrection of Jesus, that through His sacrifice He has made a way for all who believe to overcome.

This is how we fight our battles

  • We are individually members of the body of Christ, and as members of the same body we care for each other (1 Cor 12:12-27)
  • Encourage, comfort, exhort, and build up one another (1 The 5:11)

The lyric shifts to the collective plural ‘we’ which speaks to the unity of the body of believers, the body of Christ, the church.  Accordingly, through encouragement, one to another we are able to build up and strengthen each others faith.

You’ve already overcome

  • We have peace in Jesus, tribulation in the world, but Jesus has overcome the world (Jhn 16:33)
  • We overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the testimony of Jesus (Rev 12:11)

Yet another re-emphasis of the truth that even at the point when we first become aware of an approaching battle we can trust that Jesus has already overcome, He has already won the battle, He has already conquered all. What we may see as a new enemy, Jesus sees as the already defeated.

Summary

Surrounded is a song that brings to the forefront the eternal and the day-to-day deliverance that is continually available when we choose to come to the Lord with our battles. It proclaims the all sufficient sacrifice of Jesus and the power of His blood over every situation, circumstance, and challenge.  It declares the spiritually discerned truth that even when in the natural we may appear surrounded by the enemy, when our faith is in Jesus, we are in fact surrounded and protected by His presence, by the One who has overcome death.  So no matter the battle, even if we are faced with death, our trust is in Him who gives life to the dead.  We fight our battles through faith in Him.
